IP or Turbo HD (analog)?IP cameras run over network cable and support PoE (power + data on one cable) at higher resolutions — the better choice for a new installation. Turbo HD is analog over coaxial cable, cheaper, and ideal for upgrading an older system that is already in place.
NVR or DVR — and how many channels?IP cameras need an NVR, analog cameras need a DVR. The channel count (4/8/16) has to match or exceed the number of cameras you run — take a few spare channels so you can expand later.

How far back your recordings go depends on how many cameras you have and their resolution. As a rule of thumb: four 4MP cameras need roughly a 2TB drive for about two weeks of footage. Use a drive built for surveillance.
