This guide explains how to read a board's spec sheet and choose the right one for your budget and your workload.
How to choose a motherboardSettle on your processor first, then build the decision around it using these criteria:
- Socket comes first: Intel's 12th, 13th and 14th generation platforms use the LGA1700 socket, while the newer Core Ultra chips sit on LGA1851. Modern AMD Ryzen runs on AM5. These sockets are not interchangeable in any way.
- Chipset: codes such as B760, Z790, B650 and X870 define the feature set. Z and X boards allow CPU overclocking, while the cheaper B boards are plenty for most people.
- Memory type: make sure the board is DDR5 if you want the latest RAM — some older boards are still DDR4, and the two types cannot be mixed.
- Ports and expansion: check how many M.2 slots there are for NVMe drives, the USB port count, whether there is a PCIe 5.0 slot for the graphics card, and whether Wi-Fi is built in.
- Board size: ATX suits larger cases and gives you the most room to expand, while Micro-ATX fits compact, more affordable builds.
- Power delivery (VRM): powerful processors need a solid VRM with proper heatsinks to stay stable under sustained load.
Budget and everyday use (Intel)
If you are building an office machine or a light gaming rig around an Intel Core i5, an H610M board in Micro-ATX form with DDR5 memory and built-in Wi-Fi is a balanced, affordable choice that covers the basics without paying for features you will never touch.
High performance and gaming (Intel)
With a Core i7 or i9 and a strong graphics card such as an RTX 5060 or above, go for a Z790 or Z890 board to get beefier power stages, extra M.2 slots and built-in Wi-Fi.
For the modern AMD Ryzen platform
If you have gone with a Ryzen chip on the AM5 socket, X870 boards bring USB4, Wi-Fi 7 and PCIe 5.0 for a longer useful life.
- Update the BIOS if the board is older than your processor so it recognises the chip.
- Do not pay for an expensive Z board if you are never going to overclock.
- Make sure your power supply and your case match the size of the board.
