In an Iraqi summer, a car parked in the sun turns into a real oven, and any part printed in PLA filament that you leave on the dashboard comes back to you warped and sagging. The problem is neither the printer nor the design; the problem is the material itself: PLA is excellent for prototypes, decor and parts that work indoors, but it starts to soften at relatively low temperatures, and those temperatures are very easy to reach inside a closed car cabin in July or next to a heat source.

This is where ABS comes in. It is the same material found in the bodies of many home appliances, in car interior parts and in LEGO bricks. Its glass transition temperature, the point at which the material begins to soften and lose its stiffness, is around 105 degrees Celsius, and that is a decisive difference compared with PLA. On top of heat resistance, ABS takes impact and bending instead of snapping in a brittle way, and it accepts post-processing: you can drill it, sand it, work it with a file, and even weld two pieces of it together with acetone. The trade-off? ABS is harder to print than PLA, and this whole article is about making it easier.

Where ABS pays off, and where it does not

Before you buy a spool, check whether your job really needs ABS. The material is worth it in these cases:

  • Parts that live inside a car: holders, mounts, covers, and parts close to the air vents.
  • Enclosures and housings for electronics that generate heat, such as power supplies and control boards.
  • Mechanical parts exposed to pulling and knocks: gears, hinges, tool holders, and parts fastened with screws.
  • Any part you plan to sand and paint, or smooth chemically, to get a factory-like surface.

On the other hand, if the part is decorative, a first prototype, or a figure that stays indoors, PLA is easier, cleaner and sharper on detail. Do not complicate your life without a reason.

The ABS colors available let you choose by use: blue and red for parts you want to stand out, and silver for housings and covers you want to look like metal without any paint.

Settings: the numbers that make the difference

Most ABS failures come from settings copied out of a PLA profile. This is the right starting point:

  • Nozzle temperature: within a range of 240 to 280 degrees Celsius depending on the brand and the color; start in the middle and go higher if you see weak layer adhesion.
  • Bed temperature: 90 to 100 degrees Celsius. Anything below that means lifted edges.
  • Part cooling fan: very low or off; its upper limit is around 80% and you usually need far less. Fast cooling is the number one enemy of ABS.
  • Enclosure temperature: 35 to 45 degrees Celsius helps reduce the internal stress caused by the material shrinking.

And because the first print is rarely right, keep an economical spool dedicated to tests and calibration before you burn an expensive one on a big part. Grey is ideal for calibration because it shows surface flaws clearly, unlike black.

The enclosure: the rule that does not bend

ABS shrinks as it cools. If the bottom layer cools quickly while the upper layers are still hot, stresses build up that pull the corners of the part upward (warping), or open cracks between the layers on long parts. The answer is not more heat, the answer is heat stability: a closed space that keeps cold air currents out, and that is an important point here, where the air conditioner or the fan blows straight at the printer.

At the same time, ABS gives off smells and fumes while printing, so the room itself has to be well ventilated even if the printer is enclosed. The simple equation: the printer is closed, the room is ventilated, and you do not sleep in the same room while it is running.

And if your work is large parts such as covers, boxes and housings, a wide build area gives you freedom in design instead of cutting the part into pieces and gluing them together. Just remember: with an open frame and large ABS parts, a cover or an enclosure around it becomes a necessity, not a luxury.

Bed adhesion: half the battle

With a bed temperature between 90 and 100 degrees, the print surface becomes a decisive factor. Double-sided PEI plates give you two options on the same plate: a smooth side that gives a glossy, flat base, and a textured side that gives stronger adhesion and a bottom surface that hides flaws. Clean the plate with soap and water or with alcohol before every ABS print, because finger grease on its own is enough to lift a corner of the part.

And if your printer belongs to the small A1 mini class, the plate made for it works on the same logic. Just watch one important point: open-frame machines of that size suit PLA and PETG better, so keep them for design tests and first prototypes, and print the final ABS version on an enclosed machine.

Moisture: the silent enemy

ABS absorbs moisture from the air, and humidity here is high in summer, especially in the provinces close to the river. Wet filament gives you bubbles, a crackling sound at the nozzle, a rough surface and weak layer adhesion. The recommended drying: a drying oven at 80 degrees Celsius for 8 hours, or using the printer's heated bed at 90 to 100 degrees for a longer time.

But easier than repeated drying is not letting the spool get damp in the first place: store it in a sealed box with silica bags. Enclosed spool systems serve the same purpose while printing, and they add automatic color switching so you do not have to stop at every change.

Common mistakes

  • Copying a PLA profile and changing only the temperature: the fan stays at 100% and the layers separate. Change the cooling settings first.
  • Opening the printer door mid-print to have a look: one draft of cold air is enough to lift the corners and ruin hours of work.
  • Sharp corners in the design: a right angle concentrates stress at the base. A simple fillet at the edges reduces cracks noticeably.
  • Skipping the brim: on long parts or parts with a narrow base, adding a brim saves you a full reprint.
  • Printing in a closed room with no ventilation: this is a health mistake, not a technical one. Always ventilate the room.
  • Using ABS for a part that does not need it: if the part is going to stay in the shade indoors, PLA is faster, easier and more precise.

A practical summary

ABS is not a difficult material, it is a material that is sensitive to heat and air. If you get only four points right, a closed and stable space, a bed between 90 and 100 degrees, low cooling, and dry filament, you will get parts that survive the sun in a car and the knocks of daily use. Start with a small part for calibration, save the settings that worked in a profile named after the material, and then move to the big parts with confidence.
