In Iraq's advertising and promotional-gift market, most orders come in small numbers: a customer wants fifty keychains carrying his company logo, a restaurant wants raised letters for an interior wall, or a company wants ten award plaques at the end of the year. These exact quantities are the weak point of the traditional methods; a mould costs far too much to be worth it for fifty pieces, and laser engraving gives you a flat surface with no relief. This is where 3D printing steps in as a practical solution: no moulds, no minimum order quantity, and editing the file costs nothing every time the customer changes his mind.
From the customer's logo to a print-ready file
The work starts with the logo. If it reaches you as a vector file such as SVG, AI or PDF, you are halfway there: import it into a 3D design program and give it thickness with the Extrude command, around 3 to 5 mm for small pieces such as keychains, and 8 to 12 mm for the base of a plaque. The most important note here is the thickness of the thinnest line in the logo: any detail thinner than the width of the printer nozzle, and the standard nozzle is 0.4 mm, will come out broken up or disappear altogether. The practical rule is that no element should be thinner than 0.8 mm, that is twice the nozzle width.
And if the logo reaches you only as a JPG image, do not turn it straight into a solid; convert it first into paths with the Image Trace tool, then clean the paths by hand and delete the extra points. A poor image means jagged edges on the final piece, and the customer will spot them at first glance.
The printer and the working area
The size of the print area is what decides which orders you can accept. Raised letters and plaques need more room than keychains, and the larger the area, the less you need to cut a piece up and glue it back together. A wide print area lets you print a full plaque in one piece, or line up twenty keychains in a single batch, run it overnight and collect it in the morning.
Bambu Lab A1 — an easy start for a beginner
If this is the first machine you enter the field with, the Bambu Lab A1 is a comfortable choice: an FDM printer with a bed-slinger design and full automatic calibration, meaning you do not have to level the bed or set the nozzle height by hand before every order, since the machine does it itself. And that is exactly the point that breaks most beginners in promotional work: one failed first layer takes the whole order with it. It is fast and easy to run, and it suits keychains and the small promotional pieces that come in low, repeated quantities.
Bambu Lab A1 Combo — the same printer with automatic colour switching
The Combo version is exactly the same A1 printer, and the one essential difference is that it comes with the AMS Lite system for switching filaments automatically. That means you can print a logo in more than one colour in a single batch without stopping the print and swapping the spool by hand. If most of your orders are logos in two or three colours, and that is the case with most advertising work, the Combo saves you time and mistakes every single day; and if your work is mostly a single colour, the standard version is enough.
Choosing the material by where it will be used
PLA is the basis of indoor promotional work: it prints at a nozzle temperature roughly between 190 and 230 degrees Celsius with a warm bed around 35 to 60 degrees, it does not shrink much, and it gives sharp detail, which is exactly what you need for small text. Its only drawback is that it starts to soften at a temperature close to 60 degrees, so it is not suitable for a piece that stays inside a car or under the July sun.
For daily tests and first prototypes, a plain PLA spool in a basic colour is the economical choice, and black in particular hides layer lines better than any other colour.
But if the piece is going to be photographed, such as a sample you show on your page or a plaque photographed at a ceremony, a glossy surface reflects the flash and produces white patches in the photo that ruin the look. Matte PLA solves the problem: a smooth, non-reflective surface that hides the layer lines and photographs far cleaner.
Materials that give the feel of a gift
The difference between an ordinary plastic piece and a respectable gift is usually the surface texture and its colour, not the design. Silk PLA filaments give a metallic shine close to gold, and they suit award plaques, prize logos and end-of-year gifts very well, with the note that the shine highlights any flaw in the first layer, so take care of bed levelling before you start the order.
And PLA filaments blended with wood dust give a genuine wooden texture and colour, suitable for desk name plates and plaques with a classic character. Because it is a material filled with wood particles, the manufacturer recommends a 0.6 mm nozzle instead of 0.4 to reduce the chance of clogging, and its nozzle temperature range is wider (roughly 190 to 240 degrees, with the reference test at 220 degrees). It is also sensitive to moisture, so dry it before use if it has been open for a while.
Pieces that stay outdoors or in the heat
A sign hung at an entrance, a menu holder that sits in a restaurant yard through the summer, or a promotional piece placed in a car: all of these need ABS instead of PLA. ABS withstands far higher temperatures, but in return it asks for a nozzle temperature roughly between 240 and 280 degrees and a bed around 90 to 100 degrees, and most important of all it needs an enclosed printer or a chamber that blocks air draughts, because it shrinks as it cools, so the edges of the piece lift off the bed and separate, which is the well-known warping problem.
Multiple colours and the first layer
Most logos are two or three colours. You have three ways: stop the print at a certain layer and swap the spool by hand, which is free and simple for flat logos, or print the parts separately and glue them with a suitable adhesive, or use a multi-filament feeding system that swaps the spools automatically during the print, and this last option is the most suitable if coloured-logo work has become a daily routine for you.

As for the first layer, it is what decides the success of the whole order. Flexible print plates coated with PEI grip the piece while it is hot, and once it cools you release it by simply flexing the plate, with no knives and no mess. The textured face of it leaves a nice matte finish on the bottom of the piece, and that texture has itself become a finish people ask for on plaques and name boards.
Common mistakes
- Text thinner than the nozzle: any line in the logo thinner than 0.8 mm comes out broken or vanishes; enlarge the logo or thicken the strokes before printing, not after.
- Damp filament: wood-filled filaments absorb moisture quickly and then give bubbles and a crackling sound while printing; dry them and store them in a sealed bag with a moisture absorber.
- Printing ABS on an open printer: the cold draught lifts the edges of the piece and ruins the order; either enclose the printer or stay on PLA for indoor work.
- A brass nozzle with filled materials: carbon-fibre reinforced filaments wear a brass nozzle out quickly; use a hardened steel nozzle of 0.6 mm or wider.
- Promising a delivery date without calculating: read the real print time from the slicer before you give the customer a date, and add finishing time and the chance of reprinting a failed piece.
- Handing over the piece as it came out: cut the supports, sand the edges with fine sandpaper, and clean off the thin plastic strings. Ten minutes of finishing completely changes the customer's impression.
A practical summary
Start small and with one step: a plain PLA spool for testing shape and size, and a matte or silk spool for the version you hand to the customer. Get the first layer right, keep the thinnest line in the logo at 0.8 mm or more, and keep a library of ready files (keychain, phone stand, plaque base) where you swap the logo in minutes instead of designing from scratch every time. This way the printer turns from a toy into a small production line that fills orders nobody else can fill at the same speed.
